One in three UK employees have a mental health condition
Katy Ratican - Wednesday, October 17, 2018

It has been revealed that one in three UK employees have been diagnosed with a mental health condition.

That's according to a survey by Business in the Community (BITC), in partnership with Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England. The survey also found that financial services jobs are 44 percent more likely to cause a stress-related illness than the average role in the UK.

Employees within the financial services sector, such as those in banking and accountancy blame this rise in mental health issues on long working hours and a lack of emphasis placed on workplace wellbeing by employers.

Only 60 percent of employees believe that their manager has a genuine concern for their wellbeing, according to the BITC survey, while 64 percent of managers admitted to putting their organisation's interests above staff wellbeing. Worryingly, 61 percent of UK employees have experienced poor mental health solely because of work.

Workplace wellbeing training

On the surface, it seems that more accountancy firms and businesses in general are introducing positive policies such as flexible working and are promoting employee wellbeing to help combat stress. However, the survey found that only 30 percent of managers have actually received any training around mental health.

According to Deloitte's 2018 Global Human Capital Trends report, UK employers are more likely to offer mental health support to their staff than their counterparts around the world. However, it's clear that not enough support and training is being made available in workplaces across the country. So what can be done?
